About the Password Strength Checker — Test Your Password Security Free

Our free password strength checker gives you a detailed, honest analysis of any password in real time as you type. Unlike basic checkers that just show a green or red bar, ours provides a score out of 100, an estimated crack time based on modern hardware attack speeds (ranging from under a second to centuries), and a specific breakdown of every weakness found — whether that is insufficient length, missing character types, keyboard walk patterns like qwerty or asdf, sequential numbers, dictionary-like words or commonly used passwords. Use it to audit your existing passwords and understand exactly what needs to change, or to verify that a generated password meets your security requirements. Every analysis runs entirely in your browser — your password is never transmitted to any server, never logged and never stored anywhere.

How to Use the Password Strength Checker — Test Your Password Security Free

  1. 1

Type or paste your password into the input field — the analysis updates in real time as you type each character.

  2. 2

Read the strength score out of 100 and the colour-coded strength label — Very Weak, Weak, Fair, Strong or Very Strong.

  3. 3

Check the estimated crack time — this tells you how long a brute-force attack on modern hardware would take to guess your password.

  4. 4

Review the weakness list — each identified weakness is listed with a specific explanation of why it reduces security.

  5. 5

Read the improvement suggestions and make changes until your score reaches 80 or above for general accounts and 90+ for sensitive accounts.

  6. 6

Use the eye icon to toggle password visibility while editing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the crack time estimate calculated?

The estimate is based on a simulated brute-force attack at standard hardware speeds — approximately 10 billion guesses per second for offline attacks on common hash algorithms. Longer, more random passwords produce exponentially more possible combinations, pushing crack time from milliseconds to centuries.

What score should I aim for?

Aim for 80 or above (Strong) for general accounts like social media and shopping. Aim for 90 or above (Very Strong) for sensitive accounts — email, banking, work systems and cloud storage. Your password manager master password should always score 95+.

Is my password safe to enter here?

Yes. The strength analysis runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your password is never transmitted over the internet, never sent to our servers and never stored anywhere. The tool works even if you disconnect from the internet after loading the page.

My password looks complex but still scores low — why?

Common patterns reduce entropy even when they look complex. P@ssw0rd, Tr0ub4dor and L3tm3!n all score low because password crackers test these letter-number substitution patterns as a first step. True strength comes from length and genuine randomness, not visual complexity.

What is the fastest way to get a high score?

Use our Password Generator to generate a 16+ character random password with all four character types enabled. Random generation eliminates all the patterns that cracking tools exploit, giving you a top score every time.
