Frequently Asked Questions

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is a protocol used to query databases that store registered domain name information. It returns details about who owns a domain, when it was registered, when it expires, and which nameservers it uses.

Why is the owner information hidden?

Many domain registrars offer WHOIS privacy protection (also called domain privacy or proxy registration). When enabled, the registrant's personal details are replaced with the registrar's contact information to protect the owner's privacy.

How do I find out when a domain expires?

The expiry date is shown in the WHOIS record under Expiry Date. Our tool highlights domains expiring within 30 days in amber as a warning. Domain owners receive renewal reminders from their registrar before the domain expires.

Can I find out who owns an anonymous domain?

If WHOIS privacy is enabled, the registrant's details are intentionally hidden. The only way to obtain the owner's details is through a formal legal process requiring the registrar to reveal the information.

What do the domain status codes mean?

Common status codes include: clientTransferProhibited (domain cannot be transferred to another registrar), serverHold (domain is suspended), ok (normal status), and pendingDelete (domain is about to be deleted and made available for registration).
