Frequently Asked Questions
How does the checker know if a site is down?
Our tool sends an HTTP request to the website from our server in the UK. If the server responds with a successful status code (200-399), the site is up. If the connection times out or returns an error code (4xx, 5xx), the site is considered down.
What does 'down for everyone' vs 'just me' mean?
If our server cannot reach the website but you can load it in your browser, the issue might be regional or with a specific ISP. If our server can reach it but you cannot, the problem is local — try clearing your browser cache, flushing DNS, or checking your internet connection.
What response codes mean the site is up?
Status codes 200-399 indicate the site is up. 200 means OK (normal), 301/302 means redirect (still up), 304 means not modified (still up). Codes 400+ indicate errors: 404 is not found, 500 is server error, 503 is service unavailable.
Why is the response time important?
Response time measures how long the server takes to respond. Under 500ms is excellent, 500ms-2000ms is acceptable, and over 3000ms suggests the server is overloaded or struggling. Slow response times negatively affect user experience and SEO.
Can I check multiple websites at once?
Currently the tool checks one website per request. For monitoring multiple websites continuously, consider using an uptime monitoring service like UptimeRobot (free tier available).
